Merry Christmas!
Just like in the Norman Rockwell paintings . . . it’s 70 degrees, the sun is shining. . .hold on, I have to turn off the air-conditioning. Maybe it’s not what you had in mind, but Christmas in Charleston is more of what I remember from my childhood in Savannah.
We’ve had an excellent time so far, reuniting with V’s Davidson roomates. G in particular has gotten a huge kick out of performing for everyone. A quote from later in the day, after everyone had left to go home: “It’s boring being alone.”
From there it was on to Wadmalaw Island to visit V’s aunt and uncle, and finally to Thomasville on Christmas day to see V’s parents. It’s the whirlwind tour of the South. My only real concern is that we get the seafood and bar-b-que before heading back up to yankee-land.
If your’e not listening already, be sure to subscribe to James Lileks’ podcast The Diner. The Christmas entries in particular have been highly entertaining. I am most amused by the references to The Perdition Army (yang to The Salvation Army’s yin). The podcast is at iTunes and on his site www.lileks.com. (By the way, if this is your first visit to lileks, be sure to spend some time at The Institute of Official Cheer.)
