Olbermann does it again.

About a year ago, Keith Olbermann of MSNBC had a rant about G.W. Bush that made me cheer. He’s done it again. Please enjoy.

Jesus Camp

A disjointed ramble about the most disturbing movie I’ve seen in years

This is a frightening moment. I am sitting in front of a large hi-def screen currently showing “Jesus Camp.” I’m watching this because some of us think this may be funny. I’m thinking it’s more likely going to give me an aneurysm.

Oh Jeebus. A bunch of 10 year olds in a church performance dressed in fatigues and face paint. The indoctrination of children isn’t really all that funny. This is going to be a long night. “There’s a manual in the back that teaches children how to preach to kids, and how to win the lost.” And it’s sale will make me buckets of money. Sorry. Was that cynical?

And it’ll work, too

Has anyone seen the new Citgo commercial? This is a company that is essentially owned by Hugo Chavez. Ok, so you gotta like his stance on U.S. (read – Bush’s) foreign policy. But people, this is a bad man. He is milking the Venezuelan economy for everything he can. Only the oil exports allow him to maintain his cleptocracy and still appear to be helping the ever-increasing poor population of his country.

Here’s the tagline that appears at the end of the commercial – “A steady, secure supply of Venezuelan oil.” Sure it is. Hugo will make sure of it. After all, a man’s got billz.

The sad thing, though, is that this marketing plan will work. Here in America, we are so focused on the evil Arab oil sheiks, that we ignore the evil Latin dictator in our back yard. My guess is that maybe 15% of us know that Citgo is owned by the nation of Venezuela, and of those, maybe half know anything about Hugo Chavez.

Viva la ignorance!

A Case of Concience?

in: Uncategorized

From CNN.com:

SEATTLE, Washington (AP) — Anti-war activists consider 1st Lt. Ehren Watada a hero for his refusal to go to Iraq.

The Army accuses him of betraying his fellow soldiers.

And of course he is. Lt. Watada is acting with a gross disregard for his duties and the oath he took when accepting his commission. His defense for not shipping out to Iraq with his unit is

“As the order to take part in an illegal act is ultimately unlawful as
well, I must as an officer of honor and integrity refuse that order,”

This argument fails on its face. One of three things is true:

  • Either the man is acting honestly and feels that the war in Iraq is wrong, or
  • He is doing this for cynical or publicity reasons, or
  • He is a coward.

Everybody’s got a gre-gre

in: Uncategorized

Even 9 year olds, it seems. From the Chicago Tribune, Monday, January 29th:

Some of Evanston’s youngest environmentalists have learned the benefits of recycling – and the sluggishness of bureaucracy – in their attempts to rid school cafeterias of white foam lunch trays.

Now I know that this piece is intended to be a condemnation of the slow wheels of government and an honoring of some intelligent and dedicated fourth graders. Instead, it is the final piece in a cog of exploitation and agenda-pushing that quite honestly disturbs me.

The tagline of the piece claims that “[the students] did their research and presented the idea to the school board.”

I’m an educator. I teach very bright 12 and 13 year olds. I don’t believe that a 9 year old student is doing research completely unguided by an adult somewhere. And in this case, I think that adult had an agenda. More about the agenda in a moment.
