About a year ago, Keith Olbermann of MSNBC had a rant about G.W. Bush that made me cheer. He’s done it again. Please enjoy.
The infrequent thoughts of a libertarian, skeptic, and humanist
The Awe of Understanding
Olbermann does it again.
Specious and Insidious
Today my school invited Greg Mortenson (author of Three Cups of Tea) to speak to the community as the Harold Hines Fellow. Unfortunately, he was delayed in flight and did not make his afternoon appearance. So to make productive use of the time, we held a Morning Exercise and allowed the students to speak about the service learning that had been put in place as a result of this book. It was a very meaningful event, in spite of losing the services of our keynote speaker.
Before you scream, “but you said you’d never blog about work!” keep your shirt on. This isn’t really about work, but rather about the video that comprised part of our assembly. This video was produced for Pennies for Peace, Mr. Mortenson’s student-focused service and fund-raising organization. It stars his daughter, and is extremely well done and worth a watch.
You hear the “but” coming, don’t you?
It’s a Birthday Bash
Happy Birthday to me! And for my 3?? birthday we opened a bottle of Geyser Peak’s 1999 Meritage and got down to a little “Harold and Kumar go to White Castle.”
“Did Doogie Howser just steal my f$#%ing car?”
This may be the stupidest movie ever. And I’m loving it! The Kumar/Weed montage is hysterical. But not as good as the “Break Free” singing performance.
There is nothing about this movie that isn’t just incredibly stupid. And yet, it works.
So now the Sun Times is ready to hire me to be the next Roger Ebert, right?
Jesus Camp
A disjointed ramble about the most disturbing movie I’ve seen in years
This is a frightening moment. I am sitting in front of a large hi-def screen currently showing “Jesus Camp.” I’m watching this because some of us think this may be funny. I’m thinking it’s more likely going to give me an aneurysm.
Oh Jeebus. A bunch of 10 year olds in a church performance dressed in fatigues and face paint. The indoctrination of children isn’t really all that funny. This is going to be a long night. “There’s a manual in the back that teaches children how to preach to kids, and how to win the lost.” And it’s sale will make me buckets of money. Sorry. Was that cynical?

And it’ll work, too
Has anyone seen the new Citgo commercial? This is a company that is essentially owned by Hugo Chavez. Ok, so you gotta like his stance on U.S. (read – Bush’s) foreign policy. But people, this is a bad man. He is milking the Venezuelan economy for everything he can. Only the oil exports allow him to maintain his cleptocracy and still appear to be helping the ever-increasing poor population of his country.
Here’s the tagline that appears at the end of the commercial – “A steady, secure supply of Venezuelan oil.” Sure it is. Hugo will make sure of it. After all, a man’s got billz.
The sad thing, though, is that this marketing plan will work. Here in America, we are so focused on the evil Arab oil sheiks, that we ignore the evil Latin dictator in our back yard. My guess is that maybe 15% of us know that Citgo is owned by the nation of Venezuela, and of those, maybe half know anything about Hugo Chavez.
Viva la ignorance!
